Why retrofit old fluorescent signs with LED
Older fluorescent signs around downtown Toronto are often half-lit or dark from wear. Retrofitting those signs with LEDs is a way to keep the existing cabinet and update the lighting.
Visibility
LEDs are brighter and more efficient than fluorescent tubes, so the sign reads more clearly, including from farther away.
Energy
LEDs use less energy than fluorescent bulbs, which lowers the running cost of the sign over its remaining life.
Ballast and fire risk
Old fluorescent tubes can become unstable if they are not maintained. In a worst case, the ballast or a bulb can start a fire inside the sign, which can damage the building and usually means replacing the sign. LEDs are more stable and do not use that ballast setup.
